Kidney Health New Zealand Transplant Campaign

Kidney Health New Zealand is delighted to see the investment of $11 million into the "Increasing Deceased Organ Donation and Transplantation: A National Strategy". This has come about from advocacy by Kidney Health New Zealand, see below.

There are many people to thank from across the kidney community who helped to acchieve this signficant increase in funding. KHNZ will be communicating more about this in the coming weeks

For more details on the funding, see here

Transforming lives and saving money

In 2017 the then government implemented cross party-supported strategy to raise the number of organ donations in Aotearoa New Zealand.

You can find the strategy here

Since then nothing has happened other than the repositioning of ODNZ from ADHB to the New Blood and Organ Service, see the legilation here

Some months ago, Kidney Health New Zealand (KHNZ) commissioned the New Zealand Institute of Economic Research (NZIER) to investigate costs and equity issues facing New Zealand’s kidney community. Yesterday KHNZ released the NZIER report along with its own internal report. At the same time KHNZ also produced two press releases, each equally important. These are about the lack of investment in promoting the Government’s own organ donation and transplant strategy and the cost of lives and dollars associated with this inaction and the clear inequity for Maori and Pasifika communities in accessing kidneys.

You can see all the reports, political engagement, press releases and media coverage to date. You can be assured that KHNZ will continue to strongly advocate for what Dr Tania Huria described as the gold standard in kidney treatment, she went on to say that to not offer transplant as a treatment is bad medical treatment.
